Day 3 – Defending & Transitions
1v1 defending, pressing triggers, win it and play
Today we flip the script. Great teams defend together and transition instantly. We'll work on 1v1 defensive positioning, recognising when to press, and turning defence into attack in one clean move.
- 1Show them outside — never dive in centrally
- 2Stay on your feet — patience wins 1v1s
- 3Press trigger: back pass, heavy touch, or facing away from goal
- 4Win it and play forward instantly — don't reset
- 5Compact shape — defend as a unit, not individuals
Move Library
Get between the attacker and goal, balanced and patient — don't dive in.
- Side-on stance, not square
- Stay 1 metre away — close enough to press, far enough not to get turned
- Jockey the attacker towards a less dangerous area
Identify the moment when your team should press — and commit as a unit.
- Trigger: back pass to goalkeeper or defender
- Trigger: heavy touch by opposition
- First press: closest player — rest compress and cover
The moment you win the ball is your biggest attacking opportunity. Play forward immediately.
- Look up as soon as you win it — there's space behind their press
- Play the first pass within 2 seconds
- Your teammates must be ready — anticipate the transition
How to Win
Don't dive in — force them into a mistake by staying balanced and in front.
One player presses, everyone else compacts — create a trap.
Win the ball and attack immediately. The opposition is out of shape — exploit it.
Golden Rule
Defending is not passive — it's active, intelligent, and relentless. Win the ball and make them pay immediately.
Skill Steps
Basic — Win 3 clean tackles or interceptions
Stay on your feet and win the ball legally — no fouls, no diving in.
Stretch — Force a turnover using a press trigger
Identify a press trigger and lead your team's press to win the ball back.
Pro — Win the ball and start an attack in under 3 seconds
Defensive transition: win it and play forward before the opposition can recover.
Parents Corner
Individual defending technique, team pressing, and defensive-to-offensive transitions.
- Body position in 1v1 defending
- When to press vs when to delay
- Turning defensive wins into attacking opportunities
- Staying on their feet in a 1v1 (not diving in)
- Tracking a runner from behind
- Playing quickly after winning the ball
- Communicating to organise the defensive press
Play 1v1 in the garden — but the defender's job is to DELAY for 10 seconds without being beaten. Count out loud. Rotate every go.
Home Challenge
You need one other person. Practice staying patient and forcing the attacker wide.
Steps:
Defender starts between attacker and two cones (the goal)
Attacker tries to dribble through or round you
Defender must stay on their feet for 10 seconds
If you succeed, you get a point
Switch roles every 5 goes
Challenge Checklist:
- Stayed on feet in at least 3 out of 5 attempts
- Didn't dive in centrally
- Showed attacker outside both ways
- Communicated (even if playing alone — narrate your decisions)
Session Checklist
- Astro trainers (required)
- Water bottle (full)
- Packed lunch + snacks
- Rain jacket / warm layer
- Shin pads
